The next few hours passed in a haze. It involved a lot of jostling, a ton of arguing, and a brief car chase that ended with Maggie running her vehicle into a wooden fence at the edge of town. Their own car broke down not long after that, and Kot pulled Ernie out of the back and carried her to one of those steel barns, possibly the same one he’d been leaning against as he kissed his skittish mystery lover. It had been only the night before, but to Ernie it already felt like a year.

Redmond pulled a slender rod from the large pouch he now had slung across his chest. It must have been what they’d picked up from the bathhouse—which meant his “treasures” might be inside, or maybe just the tricks of his trade. He used the rod to jimmy the lock on the barn door before placing the tool back in his bag. Kot slid the door open, releasing a burst of nervous neighs and the smell of hay and horse manure.

“We can’t stay here long,” Redmond said. “There’s a chance Maggie won’t give up. She’s been after me for the longest time.”

“Do you want me to leave your daughter like this so you can save your own skin?” Kot asked as he helped Ernie inside. “You’re the one who insisted we stop at that public bath.”

“I had to get the treasures!” He jostled his satchel, the contents of which clanked and rustled.

“Pathetic place to hide them,” sneered Kot.

“Good enough to keep ’em safe, I’d say, seeing as they were still there!”

“Jeez, stop arguing and patch me up,” Ernie muttered. “Please.”

Kot settled her into the straw and knelt at her side, his jaw tight. Glaring at Redmond, he pressed his Healing card to Ernie’s shoulder. She let out a sigh as the pain faded, then a groan as the bullet pulled itself from her back and fell into the hay.

“Thank you for helping her,” Redmond said, sounding relieved as Ernie rolled her still-aching shoulder.

“I didn’t do it for you,” Kot said.

“That was a nice trick you did back there to Maggie,” Redmond offered. “I thought that meant you’d learned to love your deck by now and be grateful for the gift.”

“You know nothing about me.”

“You could have transported all of us out of there instantly.” Redmond didn’t appear to notice the clench of Kot’s fists as the younger man rose from the hay. “You could conjure up a lovely place for all of us to stay for the night, along with a tasty meal to share while we catch up on old times. And I, for one, could use a drink.” Redmond rubbed his belly.

Kot’s hand shot out and wrapped itself around Redmond’s throat. He whirled and slammed Ernie’s father against the metal wall of the barn. Ernie jumped to her feet and stood between them, pressed against the steely muscles of Kot’s tattooed forearm. “Hey,” she said quietly. “I get that he’s a jerk, but please don’t kill him before he tells me how to get out of here.
